How to Get multiple custom signatures in Gmail

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Pick out custom HTML signatures for Gmail, and get them to change based on what e-mail address you're sending them from.

If you’ve got several Gmail accounts and are frequently having to juggle signatures for each of them, worth downloading is Blank Canvas’ Gmail Signatures. This experimental
Firefox extension will drop in one of four custom HTML signatures based on whichever account you’re sending the message from. If you’re like me and have two or more accounts, setting this up is a big time saver.

It’s worth noting you cannot get at your custom signatures on browsers without the extension installed (even if it’s the same machine), and this will not change existing Gmail signature settings. This means that any Gmail-specific signature you have will still show up, however, they’ll appear underneath the one from the extension.

Gmail Signatures is an experimental add-on, and as such you must be registered with Mozilla’s Firefox add-ons site to download it.

Once installed, you get a new drop-down menu that lets you select one of your four custom signatures. These can be managed directly within Gmail, and come with an editor that shows you a live preview of whatever HTML you drop in. Included are four presets with nicknames like personal, business, and family, all of which can be renamed to suit the type of signature you’ve set up.

R.E.M. PR firm rips off Improv Everywhere, then ap

Monday, June 28th, 2010

In fact, the publicity firm later removed the video from the YouTube remhq channel, and wrote Todd a note saying, “Sincere apologies and do note us on team R.E.M. love the stuff you guys do.”

After reading Tuesday night on Laughing Squid that a new R.E.M. video had been posted by the band’s publicity firm on YouTube that seemed to blatantly rip off Improv Everywhere’s now-famous “freezes,” I wrote to the culture jamming collective’s founder to get his take.

Of course, one issue seems to be the question of what’s original. As a commenter on this story posted earlier today, a TV sketch comedy show had done a bit with freezes years before Improv Everywhere came along.

(Credit:
YouTube)

“We never claimed to invent the idea of freezing in place,” Todd wrote to me in an email Wednesday. “I’m sure a caveman froze in place as a gag. What I said in the post (on Improv Everywhere’s site) was that we started the current worldwide phenomenon of ‘getting a mob of people to freeze in place in a public area.’ It’s happened in over 27 countries and it’s all been inspired by our Frozen Grand Central video which has almost 10 million views on YouTube. So sure, Just For Laughs had 1 to 3 people freeze in place at a time in a grocery store many years ago for their television show, but I don’t really think that’s relevant to what happened here with R.E.M.”

Update (3:52 pm): This story got the name of the R.E.M. video wrong. It’s fixed in the text below. Additionally, there’s new comments from Improv Everywhere founder Charlie Todd below.

The note also said that the video would be re-edited to give Improv Everywhere credit.

An R.E.M. video posted to YouTube was an obvious take-off of the ‘Frozen Grand Central’ video from culture-jamming group Improv Everywhere and originally didn’t give proper credit. The band has taken the video down and told Improv Everywhere it is re-editing it.

To Todd, that’s not necessarily the point.

In a posting on the Improv Everywhere site, Todd wrote, “It’s sort of shocking to see this video which gives absolutely no credit to us and presents the concept of ‘getting a mob of people to freeze in place in a public area’ as their own original idea.”

The video, R.E.M.’s “The Big Still,” was an obvious take-off on Improv Everywhere’s now-famous Grand Central Station freeze event, in which hundreds of participants showed up in the Manhattan train station and suddenly froze in place for five minutes. Improv Everywhere’s YouTube video of the event has been seen nearly 9.9 million times.

But all seems well now. And it’s nice to see a band like R.E.M., or its publicity people, be so reactive and responsive to this kind of calling out.

“I did not know they were making this video and was not involved in any way,” Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere’s founder, told me by e-mail late last night. “They edited the YouTube description to give us credit, which is enough to satisfy me.”

High-res mini microscope ditches the lenses

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

To make the instrument, engineers placed a layer of metal atop a grid of charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors, the kind of light-sensitive components found in digital cameras. They then punched holes in the metal–each less than one-millionth of a meter in diameter–arranging each opening to correspond with a sensor on the pixel array.

Researchers have come up with a microscopic microscope, tiny enough to fit on a fingertip, that can be cheaply mass-produced and used to scan blood and water for pathogens.

“Our research is motivated by the fact that microscopes have been around since the 16th century, and yet their basic design has undergone very little change and has proven prohibitively expensive to miniaturize,” said Yang, who is currently in talks with biotech companies about mass-producing the chip, a process he says costs about $10 per microscope.

Gravity or an electric charge carries the liquid sample across a tiny microfluidic channel. As cells or small organisms cross over the diagonally placed holes, the objects block the passage of light from above onto the sensor below. This produces a series of images, consisting of light and shadow, akin to the output of a pinhole camera.

A diagram shows how a fluid sample moves across the microscope’s tiny channel.

Yang imagines a range of uses for the so-called optofluidic microscope, which measures about the size of George Washington’s nose on a quarter and has the magnifying power of a top-quality optical microscope, according to the Caltech research team.

The individual pictures, each capturing a different view of the object, are then pieced together to create a two-dimensional composite image.

Health field workers could use it to examine blood samples for malaria and check water for giardia and other parasites. It could be employed on the battlefield. Yang said the microscope could one day even be implanted inside humans to isolate rogue cancer cells circulating in the bloodstream.

“The whole thing is truly compact–it could be put in a cell phone–and it can use just sunlight for illumination, which makes it very appealing for third-world applications,” said Changhuei Yang, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology and one of the lead developers of the device.

The high-resolution microscope functions without the large and expensive lenses usually associated with such imaging devices. Instead, it combines the chip technology found in digital cameras with “microfluidics,” the science of channeling liquid at scales far smaller than a common droplet.

Those seeking a more comprehensive explanation of the optofluidic ’scope can visit the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, where Yang and his team just published their research. Their work was funded by DARPA’s Center for Optofluidic Integration at Caltech, the Wallace Coulter Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health.

Gamers Skinny but depressed

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The survey was conducted across three different institutions: University of Southern California, the Palo Alto Research Center, and the University of Delaware. Players of the Sony Online Entertainment-developed PC MMO EverQuest II were offered a special weapon, “the Greatstaff of the Sun Serpent,” as incentive for participation.

The downside, however, was that the gamers reported more cases of depression and substance abuse than their compatriots. “They may be drawn to use the game to help deal with emotional distress,” says team member Scott Caplan of the University of Delaware.

The stereotype of the fat gamer has been destroyed. A recent study shows that the average gamer engages in vigorous exercise once or twice a week, which the researchers say is more than most Americans. Adult gamers have an average body mass index of 25.2, compared to the overall American average of 28, according to a story in New Scientist.

The study didn’t mention if the gamers still lived in their parents’ basements. I’d like to see a sys admin study next where we find out they are all tri-athletes.

The work also suggested that young men do not dominate such games, as they are often assumed to: there were more players in their thirties than in their twenties, and older players tended to spend more time in the game. Furthermore, although fewer women played the game, those who did typically played for longer than men (Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, vol 13, p 993).

RemoTV lets people share media on PCs, phones

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

You can import home videos and share them with friends and family, and access your entire media catalog from anywhere. The media can be delivered to PCs, cell phones, game consoles, and iPods.

A Media Book app lets you post content to a Facebook profile and send MediaPokes, that have multimedia content attached, to friends.

SAN DIEGO–RemoTV demonstrated at DemoFall a Channels application that lets people stream their media libraries to any Internet-connected device.

People can browse and play the shared content, comment on it, and rate it.

Mufin opens up with Facebook app and iTunes plug-i

Friday, June 4th, 2010

The new iTunes plug-in scans your library and offers up song recommendations based on musical similarities. (click to enlarge)

Note: The iTunes plug-in is currently Windows-only. You can download it here (.EXE warning). Here’s what it looks like:

New on Thursday is both a Facebook app and the previously mentioned iTunes plug-in that scans your library to give you recommendations. Unlike Apple’s “Genius” analyzer system in iTunes, Mufin actually scans your tracks for relational relevance instead of giving you an aggregate hodge-podge of recommendations based on the playlists and purchases of iTunes users. The only catch here is that you’re limited to Mufin’s relatively small 4 million-song database, which is roughly half that of iTunes.

Previously: Mufin lets you discover new music with science

Users are also getting the option to save playlists and notes–the service’s equivalent to a shopping list. Previously these would disappear between sessions, which kept it from doubling as an ad-hoc music streaming tool.

Mufin )

Music search and recommendation tool Mufin is opening to everyone this morning. The service, which launched in private beta in early October, lets you find music that’s similar to a track you know based on a scientific analysis of its composition.

As for the Facebook application, it’s little more than a widget that lets you search for tracks without leaving the social network. It does however give you a “discovery wall,” which lets you share and view tracks bookmarked by friends–similar to the MySpace version that was available back at launch. If you’re looking for something a little more anonymous, the Mufin team is now providing weekly recommendations for music to look out for, although you’ll have to purchase them off-site.
